It was during his high school years that Jeff began learning the skills of piano technology. In 1984, he attended a two-week informational workshop at the University of South Carolina taught by James Bundrick, then the full time staff Piano Technician at the USC School of Music. Jeff says this was just enough information to “make me dangerous”! During college, Mr. Tanner was fortunate to be able to serve as student assistant to Dennis Curtis, RPT, further developing his skills on the fine pianos at the University of Georgia School of Music.
It was here where he was able to really hone his skills to a professional level, learning primarily from Mr. Curtis, but also from other technicians and through attending meetings of the Atlanta Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild. After graduation, Mr. Tanner attempted several different sales positions in an attempt to utilize his degree, but continued to maintain a small clientele of piano owners, and performed occasional contract work for a number of piano dealerships. It seemed that a career in piano technology was sure to be his calling.
In 1997, he accepted a contract position with Turner Keyboards, Inc., of Augusta, GA, a Yamaha and Steinway dealership. Then, in January of 1998, the University of Georgia came calling again, and hired him on a temporary/full time basis until he accepted a full time appointment at the University of South Carolina School of Music that August. Tanner enjoyed a very good report and acclaim with the faculty at USC, and his reputation has grown steadily in greater Columbia and South Georgia to be among the finest piano teachers and performers in the area. In addition to preparing pianos for the more than capable pianists at the Universiy of Georgia and the University of South Carolina, Mr. Tanner has prepared pianos for some of the world’s finest pianists and popular musicians, including Steinway touring artist, Van Cliburn Gold Medalist, and recording artists,.
